Everything and Nothing: The Update
So where did we leave off centuries ago?
Hah!?
I was heading to that place I had never been right?
And yes, I have been here for about two month now.
Oh BOY! It is surreal!
It turns out, it is not as bad as I thought.
Or did I just adjust(Insert question mark and exclamation mark)
First off, I can not seem to find good food. I have to go 64 kms for decent matooke and peas or a sandwich. And I love good food. Three weeks in and I lost 2kgs! I am African people! Thickness is a thing. Btw, NO BODY SHAMING, I think We are all beautiful humans irrespective of our body shapes, size, figures, dimensions, proportions, forms, silhouettes.(these are all the words I can think of now)
You just have to love and appreciate what you are, the rest will fall in place. And for the rest of us to stop being judgmental snobs.
Just so we are clear, You need to watch what you Eat, Eat well, Live well, drink lots of water, Sleep well, and Exercise-Being able to run after your 17 year old nephew who plays rugby, and just took an embarrassing picture of you should be some motivation and every once in a while go for all those selfish things. You know, a spa day, scented candles and a good massage.
........so before we continue, the above paragraph is sooooo cliché. You know what to do. Do IT!........
Secondly
Every time it rains, power goes off!!!!
Come on!!!!!!!!
And not just for an hour. No, for about 12 hours!
In this day and age, Electricity is a basic need dear UEDCL(Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited) or UMEME, or Rural electrification or whoever. I am only whining because by the time the 12 hours are done, my phone battery is down and so is my laptop. But what happens to the poor fellow on the operating table in a hospital? or the one on oxygen? or the baby in an incubator?
And this is something our government bodies need to improve on. Quality Service Delivery.
......... Let me get back to complaining now that I am done sounding like a smart ***........
This place is hooooot! Am told we are not in the dry season yet. So I am looking forward to this.
Hold up, I like Hot.
Hate the cold. Give me the sun any day, and I will not grumble as much. And this is one of the things that make this place bearable for me. (I know, keep your opinions of my weather preferences to yourself.]
Every one just seems to mind their business yet keep it cool, casual and friendly.
Have I mentioned that you do not spend 2 hours in traffic just to get to any place! This is so refreshing.
The walks back to and from my place, where I see and learn to appreciate humanity.
It is Different.
- No one is trying to snatch your handbag
- The little children who make it a point to pass by Office on their way from school just to say hi-Daily. Or is it because they get biscuits sometimes😏😏
- The ladies walking in groups to the trading center just so they can catch up on the town gossip in the evening.
- The road side vendors trying to sell me tangerine (every day) and gonja (Lawwd I love plantain)
- Our work neighbor who greets us shirtless from across the road on his house veranda! (it is hilarious) shouting at each other in greeting across 30 meters.
- Do not get me started on how they celebrate. It is massively huge. I spent my Independence day here. FYI it is a public holiday. As early as 10am, the butchers were out of beef. (Africans celebrate with meat-am just saying) They held a church service for crying out loud, you would think it is Christmas day. You should have seen the dancing that followed later on in the evening....Makes me wonder what Christmas or New Years will look like
Makes you appreciate the simple things.
The icing to the cake is when I randomly bump into an old friend from this part of the country... "First thing they say is what are you doing here?"😲 And then the catch up.
We are not so different after all and neither is this world too big.
And then the calls I get from family and friends checking in most especially when I have not returned to Kampala in a while. Needing a debrief of the day's/week's events, and the giggles, the phone gossip, the Texts etc.
All the love that we have to share!
The Update: I am telling stories till I move elsewhere. For you have to live them to be able to tell them. I have the chance. I am making it count.

PS
Kanye West and Kim Kardashian West decided to visit the country seven days back, very disturbing how they wore those neon, lemon green things all through the trip.(or whatever color that was)
It was annoying!!!!!!!!!!!!
I need a good recommendation for any Exceptional University/Institute offering several free short online courses
Do not forget to call and check up some random human in your contact list. they may die before you do
[Ok may be this was not the best reason to use.]

ReplyDeleteIf this will make you feel better about yourself dorah, know that I love you.
it's beautiful reading your work too.

I had a chance to live in karamoja for a few hours. Reading this post reminds me of those hours. It feels surreal. Life was lived in its true form. It's not contaminated with civilities.
ReplyDeleteI am glad you're picking up your MOJO from there. I won't promise to check on you every day but will always comment on your whatsapp status.
